Crohn’s Disease: Unique Challenges in a Longitudinal Family Study

Crohn’s disease (CD) is on the rise.  A form of inflammatory bowel disease affecting the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, CD causes abdominal pain, diarrhea, fever, and weight loss. Complications like bowel obstruction may occur, and those afflicted with CD have a higher risk of bowel cancer.. The cause of CD is unknown, but it may be due to a combination of genetic, immune, environmental, and bacterial factors. These factors combine to create a chronic inflammatory disorder where the immune system damages the GI tract when targeting enteric microbes.
